Biography

The central figure of the Spanish nationalist piano school, Albeniz distilled the sounds of Andalusian flamenco, guitar music, and folk song into a highly idiomatic piano style. His masterwork, Iberia (1905-08), a suite of twelve impressionistic pieces, is one of the most technically demanding works in the repertoire and a landmark of pianistic color. Its influence on Ravel and Debussy was profound.
