Biography

The most celebrated of J.S. Bach's sons and a central figure in the transition from Baroque to Classical style, C.P.E. Bach worked for Frederick the Great in Berlin and later in Hamburg. His keyboard sonatas and fantasias — marked by sudden dynamic contrasts, unexpected harmonies, and intense emotional expression — are foundational documents of the Empfindsamer Stil (sensitive style). His Essay on the True Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments remains essential reading.
