Biography

The youngest surviving son of J.S. Bach, Johann Christian spent his formative years in Italy studying opera before settling in London as music master to the royal family. His galant, melodically gracious keyboard works — six sets of sonatas, multiple concertos — were the primary model for the young Mozart, who met him in London in 1764 and adored him. The singing, lyrical quality of his keyboard writing directly shaped Mozart's approach to the piano concerto.
