Biography

One of the most naturally gifted melodists of 20th-century American music, Barber composed in a lyrical, neo-Romantic style that stood apart from the dominant Modernist trends of his era. His Piano Sonata (Op. 26) is a major work combining 12-tone technique with Romantic lyricism. His Excursions (Op. 20) draw on American folk and jazz idioms. His Adagio for Strings is the most performed American orchestral work of the 20th century.
