Biography

One of the defining figures of 20th-century music, Bartok combined systematic ethnomusicological research into Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian, and Slovak folk music with a highly individual harmonic language. His piano works — Mikrokosmos (153 progressive pieces), the three piano concertos, Out of Doors suite, Allegro barbaro, Sonata (1926), and 14 Bagatelles — form one of the most significant bodies of work for the instrument in the 20th century.
