Biography

The first American woman to achieve recognition as a major symphonist and art song composer, Beach was largely self-taught after her early studies. Her Piano Concerto in C# minor (Op. 45) is a large-scale Romantic work of real ambition, and her Piano Quintet (Op. 67) is among the finest American chamber works of the era. Her solo piano pieces — Ballad (Op. 6), Scottish Legend (Op. 54), and the suite From Grandmother's Garden — show a lyrical gift firmly in the Brahmsian tradition.
