Biography

A student of Schoenberg and member of the Second Viennese School, Berg developed the most lyrical and emotionally immediate voice within the atonal tradition. His Piano Sonata Op. 1 (1908) is a single-movement work of extraordinary concentrated intensity that stands at the threshold between late Romanticism and atonality. His operas Wozzeck and Lulu are considered the summits of 20th-century music theater.
