Biography

A Pulitzer Prize-winning composer whose work spans an extraordinary range — from fierce Modernism to ragtime to cabaret songs — Bolcom studied with Milhaud and Messiaen in Paris before developing his own pluralistic style. His 12 New Etudes for piano (1977-86) are among the most significant contributions to the form in American music, each exploring a different technical and expressive world. His ragtime works, written alongside his wife Joan Morris, helped spark the 1970s ragtime revival.
