Biography

The great Classical counterweight to Liszt and Wagner's progressivism, Brahms fused Baroque counterpoint, Classical form, and Romantic harmonic language into a uniquely powerful synthesis. His piano works include three sonatas, the Handel and Paganini Variations, two concertos, and the late character pieces (Opp. 116-119) — some of the most intimate and harmonically searching music ever written for the instrument. He was also Clara Schumann's closest lifelong friend and champion.
