Biography

A German-born composer and pianist who settled in Paris, Burgmüller is best known for his graded piano studies that remain among the most widely used intermediate teaching pieces in the world. His 25 Progressive Studies Op. 100 introduce musical character and pianistic idiom simultaneously — each piece has a descriptive title and a specific technical focus. His 18 Studies Op. 109 and 12 Brilliant Studies Op. 105 continue at higher levels. His pieces occupy the repertoire between Czerny's purely technical exercises and the artistic demands of Schumann and Chopin.
