Biography

A pianist of legendary power and a composer-philosopher who straddled the 19th and 20th centuries without fully belonging to either, Busoni is best known for his piano transcriptions of Bach — particularly the Chaconne from the Violin Partita No. 2 and the Toccata, Adagio and Fugue — which transformed organ and orchestral textures into a unique pianistic world. His Fantasia contrappuntistica and the late Sonatinas are significant original works. His treatise Sketch of a New Aesthetic of Music anticipated many 20th-century developments.
