Biography

A largely self-taught French composer who worked as a civil servant until his forties, Chabrier brought fresh wit and harmonic boldness to French piano music that strongly influenced Fauré, Debussy, and Ravel. His Pieces pittoresques (1881) were described by Fauré as the starting point of modern French piano music. The Bourrée fantasque (1891), written three years before his death, is among the most brilliant short concert pieces in the French repertoire. His España for orchestra became his most popular and enduring work.
