Biography

A virtuoso pianist, composer, publisher, and piano manufacturer, Clementi shaped the development of piano technique more than almost any other individual. His Gradus ad Parnassum (1817-26) — 100 etudes covering the full range of Classical piano technique — became the definitive technical method. His sonatas were championed by Beethoven as models of true piano writing. A famous competitive encounter with Mozart at the Habsburg court in 1781 ended inconclusively.
