Biography

The uncle of Francois and the first significant member of the musical Couperin dynasty, Louis Couperin was organist at St Gervais in Paris. His unmeasured preludes for harpsichord — written without barlines or time signatures, their rhythm left to the performer's interpretation — are among the most enigmatic and extraordinary pieces in the keyboard repertoire. His chaconnes, sarabandes, and other dance pieces show a harmonic boldness remarkable for their era.
