Biography

The most prolific and influential pedagogue in piano history, Czerny studied with Beethoven and later taught Liszt, among hundreds of others. His exercises and studies — the School of Velocity (Op. 299), the Art of Finger Dexterity (Op. 740), and the Practical Method (Op. 600) — remain the backbone of technical piano training worldwide. His output exceeded 1,000 opus numbers, the vast majority written for pedagogical purposes. Though rarely performed in concert, his fingerprint is on every pianist who has ever practiced scales.
