Biography

A French organist who died at just 30, de Grigny left a single published collection — the Livre d'orgue (1699) — that is considered one of the supreme masterpieces of French Baroque organ music. It comprises a Mass and five hymn settings using the full palette of French Classical organ registration. J.S. Bach thought highly enough of the work to copy the entire collection by hand, and its influence persisted through the 18th century.
