Biography

The originator of musical Impressionism and one of the most transformative figures in Western music, Debussy dissolved the tonal syntax of the 19th century into a language of color, texture, and atmosphere. His piano works — two books of Preludes, two books of Etudes, Images, Children's Corner, Pour le piano, Suite bergamasque, L'Isle joyeuse — redefined what the instrument could express. The influence of Japanese gamelan, Gregorian chant, and Spanish guitar all filtered through his unique sensibility.
