Biography

An Austrian composer and music publisher best known as the unwitting instigator of Beethoven's greatest piano work — his modest waltz theme became the subject of 33 variations. As a composer in his own right, Diabelli contributed substantially to the teaching repertoire: his Sonatinas Op. 151 and Op. 168 are elegant, well-crafted works widely used in early Classical instruction. His publishing house Diabelli and Co. was among the most significant in Vienna, issuing first editions of Schubert among many others.
