Biography

An intensely self-critical French organist and composer, Duruflé published fewer than 15 works, each meticulously crafted. His organ works — the Suite (Op. 5), Scherzo (Op. 2), Prélude et Fugue sur le nom d'Alain (Op. 7), and Prélude, Adagio et Choral varié sur le Veni Creator (Op. 4) — combine Gregorian chant modality with Impressionist harmonic color in a uniquely luminous style. His Requiem (Op. 9) is among the most beloved choral works of the 20th century.
