Biography

One of the most individual voices in French music of the second half of the 20th century, Dutilleux worked with extreme deliberateness, leaving a small but finely wrought catalog. His Piano Sonata (1948) is the major solo piano work — a large-scale three-movement piece of considerable technical and expressive demands, drawing on Ravel and Prokofiev while finding its own voice. His orchestral works Metaboles and Timbres, Espace, Mouvement are among his most celebrated compositions.
