Biography

A central figure in French music whose career spanned from the Romantic era to early Modernism, Faure's piano output — thirteen nocturnes, thirteen barcarolles, six impromptus, five sets of piano pieces — demonstrates a harmonic language of exceptional refinement and subtlety. His late works (from around Op. 100 onwards) move into a spare, introspective modality that anticipates 20th-century French music. He was also Ravel's teacher.
