Biography

The inventor of the piano nocturne, Field spent most of his career in Russia where he was enormously successful as a teacher and performer. His 18 nocturnes established the template — singing right-hand melody over broken-chord left-hand accompaniment — that Chopin would develop into a vehicle of much greater expressive depth. His playing was renowned for its delicate, singing tone quality.
