Biography

Originally a virtuoso viola da gamba player at the court of Louis XIV, Forqueray's legacy rests on five suites of Pièces de clavecin published posthumously by his son Jean-Baptiste in 1747 — harpsichord transcriptions of the elder Forqueray's viol pieces. These works are notable for their dramatic intensity, virtuosic writing, and dark, passionate character that contrasts sharply with the elegant refinement of his contemporary Couperin.
