Biography

The central figure of the French Romantic organ school and an influential teacher whose students included d'Indy, Chausson, and Duparc. His Prelude, Choral et Fugue and Prelude, Aria et Final are his major piano works — ambitious in scope and deeply influenced by Bach and Beethoven. His Violin Sonata in A major (with piano) is among the greatest chamber works of the 19th century.
