Biography

A crucial transmitter of Italian, French, and German keyboard styles, Froberger studied with Frescobaldi in Rome and worked at the Habsburg court in Vienna. He standardized the sequence of movements in the keyboard suite — allemande, courante, sarabande, gigue — which became the template for all subsequent Baroque suite writing. His lamentation pieces are among the most emotionally expressive keyboard works of the 17th century.
