Biography

A composer uniquely positioned between classical and popular traditions, Gershwin wrote Rhapsody in Blue (1924) — the most famous American concertante piano work — as well as the Piano Concerto in F, the suite An American in Paris, and three Preludes for piano. His opera Porgy and Bess (1935) is the greatest American opera. His ability to synthesize jazz, Tin Pan Alley, and European classical structures remains without parallel.
