Biography

The last great English virginalist, Gibbons served as organist of the Chapel Royal and Westminster Abbey. His keyboard works include fantasias of remarkable contrapuntal sophistication, elegant pavans and galliards, and a set of variations on The Woods So Wild. His music bridges the Renaissance and early Baroque, combining polyphonic mastery with a distinctly personal harmonic expressiveness.
