Biography

A student of Pedrell alongside Albeniz, Granados developed a more intimate, lyrical Spanish nationalism in his piano writing. His Goyescas (1911) — six pieces inspired by the paintings of Goya — are the summit of his output, combining elaborate pianistic texture with deep emotional warmth. He died in 1916 when his ship was torpedoed crossing the English Channel after attending the New York premiere of his opera.
