Biography

One of the most significant living composers, Gubaidulina developed a deeply spiritual musical language in Soviet Russia drawing on Orthodox Christianity, Sufi mysticism, and a wide range of non-Western instruments and techniques. Her piano works include the Chaconne (1962), Piano Sonata (1965), and Musical Toys (1969). Shostakovich singled her out as one of the three most important Soviet composers of her generation, and she has since received every major composition prize in the world.
