Biography

A German organist, pianist, and composer who spent most of his career in Altona near Hamburg, Gurlitt was extraordinarily prolific — his output runs to nearly two hundred opus numbers, dominated by short character pieces and pedagogical collections for piano. His Albumleaves for the Young, Op. 101, The First Steps of the Young Pianist, Op. 82, and Buds and Blossoms, Op. 107 remain widely used at the elementary and early-intermediate levels. His writing combines Romantic melodic warmth with the technical clarity expected of teaching material.
