Biography

Though celebrated above all for his operas and oratorios, Handel was a keyboard virtuoso of the first order. His eight suites for harpsichord (1720) are among the most significant keyboard collections of the Baroque, containing the famous Air and Variations known as The Harmonious Blacksmith. His keyboard style is more extrovert and harmonically direct than Bach's — galant in impulse even within Baroque forms.
