Biography

A leading figure of German Neoclassicism and the theory of Gebrauchsmusik (functional music), Hindemith composed the three-volume Ludus Tonalis (1942) — preludes, fugues, and interludes covering all twelve keys — as a deliberate homage to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. His piano sonatas and the Klaviermusik Op. 37 are significant contributions to the modernist piano repertoire.
