Biography

One of the most original voices in early 20th-century music, Janáček developed a highly idiosyncratic style rooted in Moravian folk music and his intensive study of natural speech patterns — a technique he called speech melody. His piano works concentrate in three major sets: On the Overgrown Path (two books, 1901-11), In the Mists (1912), and the Piano Sonata 1. X. 1905 commemorating a student killed at a Czech nationalist demonstration. His late operas — Jenufa, Katya Kabanova, The Cunning Little Vixen — are recognized as masterworks.
