Biography

The King of Ragtime and the first African American composer to achieve wide recognition for instrumental concert music, Joplin elevated the syncopated dance form into a sophisticated art with works like Maple Leaf Rag (1899), The Entertainer (1902), and the opera Treemonisha. He insisted ragtime should be played slowly and with dignity, not as novelty. His music was largely forgotten after his death until a 1970s revival brought it to global audiences through the film The Sting.
