Biography

A Hungarian composer whose work is characterized by extreme economy and concentrated intensity, Kurtag studied with Milhaud and Messiaen in Paris and was deeply influenced by Webern's aphoristic style. His Jatékok (Games) — an ongoing series of piano pieces begun in 1973 — range from simple pedagogical studies to dense, highly personal miniatures. He is widely considered one of the most important living composers.
