Biography

The greatest Cuban classical composer and an internationally celebrated pianist, Lecuona synthesized Cuban dance forms — the habanera, son, guaracha — with European salon and concert styles. His Malaguena from the suite Andalucia is the most widely performed of his works. La comparsa, Danza lucumi, and the Afro-Cuban suite are equally significant. He spent much of his later career in the United States and had a significant influence on Latin popular music.
