Biography
A German pianist and composer who spent most of his career in Breslau (now Wrocław), where he worked as a music teacher and organist. Lichner produced a large quantity of pedagogical piano music — sonatinas, salon pieces, and teaching works — that remained in use in elementary piano instruction throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His sonatinas, particularly those of Opp. 4 and 49, are still occasionally encountered in early intermediate instruction for their clear voice-leading and manageable technical demands.
