Biography

One of the most original compositional voices of the second half of the 20th century, Ligeti escaped Hungary after the 1956 uprising and developed a radical micropolyphonic style. His Etudes for piano (eighteen pieces in three books) are the most significant contribution to the form since Debussy — technically ferocious, rhythmically complex, and drawing on influences from Nancarrow, African polyrhythm, and fractal geometry.
