Biography

The greatest piano virtuoso of the 19th century and one of its most original composers, Liszt invented the modern piano recital, the symphonic poem, and transformed what was technically possible on the instrument. His output includes the Transcendental Etudes, Hungarian Rhapsodies, Annees de pelerinage, Sonata in B minor, and late experimental works of unsettling harmonic modernity. He was also an extraordinarily generous teacher and an influential conductor who championed Wagner, Berlioz, and many others without fee.
