Biography

The first American composer to achieve serious recognition in Europe on classical terms, MacDowell studied in Frankfurt and Paris before returning to the United States. His two piano concertos, four piano sonatas (including the Sonata Tragica and Sonata Eroica), and short character pieces (Woodland Sketches, Sea Pieces, New England Idyls) represent the peak of American Romantic piano composition before the 20th century.
