Biography

A child prodigy of extraordinary gifts, Mendelssohn composed his String Octet at 16 and the Midsummer Night's Dream Overture at 17. His piano output includes the eight books of Songs Without Words — lyrical miniatures that defined the domestic Romantic piano piece — as well as the Variations serieuses (Op. 54), a major work of Classical rigor in Romantic dress. He was also instrumental in reviving Bach's St Matthew Passion in 1829.
