Biography

A deeply religious composer whose music draws on Catholic theology, birdsong transcriptions, Indian rhythmic theory, and his own synaesthesia. His Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jesus (1944) — twenty meditations on the infant Jesus — is one of the most ambitious works in the piano repertoire, lasting over two hours. The Quartet for the End of Time and Catalogue d'oiseaux are equally important works featuring piano.
