Biography

A member of Les Six and one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century, Milhaud absorbed Brazilian rhythms during a diplomatic posting in Rio de Janeiro and synthesized them with jazz, bitonality, and French neoclassicism. His Saudades do Brasil (1920-21) — twelve evocations of Rio neighborhoods — is his most performed piano work. Scaramouche for two pianos and his piano concertos complete a significant keyboard output. He taught at Mills College and Aspen for decades, influencing generations of American composers.
