Biography

A Catalan composer of extraordinary intimacy and economy, Mompou spent most of his life in Paris and Barcelona developing a language of profound stillness. His Musica callada (1959-67) — 28 pieces whose title comes from the mystic poet St John of the Cross — is his masterwork, drawing on Satie's simplicity and Chopin's interior world. His Impresiones intimas, Cants magics, and variations on a Chopin nocturne are equally treasured. He rarely barred his music and avoided development in the academic sense entirely.
