Biography

A member of the Russian nationalist group The Five, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition (1874) is his piano masterpiece — a suite of character pieces inspired by an exhibition of paintings by his friend Viktor Hartmann. Its innovative harmonic language, modal inflections, and raw power were far ahead of their time; Ravel's famous orchestration (1922) brought it to global attention. Mussorgsky left much of his work unfinished.
