Biography

An American expatriate who spent most of his life in Mexico City, Nancarrow composed almost exclusively for player piano, punching rolls by hand to create music of rhythmic complexity impossible for human performers. His 50+ Studies for Player Piano explore simultaneous tempos, irrational rhythmic relationships, and canonic structures of unprecedented intricacy. Ligeti called him the most important composer of the 20th century.
