Biography

The first African American woman to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra (Chicago Symphony, 1933), Price synthesized European classical forms with African American folk idioms, spirituals, and the juba dance rhythm. Her Piano Sonata in E minor (1932) and three piano concertos are her major keyboard works. Long neglected after her death, her manuscripts were rediscovered in 2009 and she has since been recognized as a major figure in American music.
