Biography

A child prodigy who entered the St Petersburg Conservatory at 13, Prokofiev developed a piano style of percussive attack, sardonic wit, and lyrical beauty. His nine piano sonatas — especially Nos. 6, 7, and 8 known as the War Sonatas — are landmarks of 20th-century piano writing. His five piano concertos and numerous solo works including the Toccata (Op. 11) and Sarcasms are essential repertoire.
