Biography

A craftsman of supreme refinement and economy, Ravel's piano works — Jeux d'eau, Sonatine, Miroirs, Gaspard de la nuit, Valses nobles et sentimentales, Le Tombeau de Couperin — are models of pianistic imagination. Gaspard de la nuit (1908) is among the most technically demanding works in the repertoire. He rejected the label Impressionist but his harmonic palette and sensitivity to color place him alongside Debussy as the defining voice of early 20th-century French music.
