Biography

A prolific and harmonically adventurous German composer who synthesized the contrapuntal heritage of Bach with post-Wagnerian chromaticism. His organ works — including monumental fantasias and fugues, chorale preludes, and sonatas — represent the most substantial German contribution to the organ repertoire since Bach. The Fantasy and Fugue on B-A-C-H (Op. 46) is among the most technically demanding works in the organ literature.
